cherry_grouping-kyle.jpgI had the great pleasure of studying philosophy and English at the University of Rhode Island: read lots of books, wrote lots of papers, loved every minute.  After that I found a job in  the glass-making field.  I have worked with glass for five years and, honestly, can’t wait until I can blow some more glass tomorrow.  I love the sensory experience of the studio, the heat on my face, the smell of melting bees wax on the tools, the bright orange glow of the glass of the ovens, the roar of the fire in the furnace, the taste of the gallons and gallons of water I desperately pour into my body.  Working with glass on an artistic level, like creating with any medium, is a doorway tofreedom.  The glass can become anything…I love that…and I love helping the glass on its way.

Liquid forms, crisp patterns, balance, symmetry; these qualities drive my aesthetic and attract me to the world of glass-making.  The years studying philosophy and this cultural moment inform my vision in art-making.

The ethereal “artistic vision” meets the physical world in unique circumstances when art-making happens in the “hot shop.”  Glass work is  hands-on--a very physical, sometimes grueling, hands-on--and the tactility of the process is preserved in the final piece.  The art object is in three dimensions and begs to be touched:  cool smooth contours, mottled bumps, pebbled surfaces.   The “art” experience of glass springs first and most prominently from the aesthetic response:  beauty in form, shape, color, pattern, texture.
