My work as a potter reflects my appreciation for classical form and functionality. My pots are meant to be used as everyday ware and my aim is to make beautiful pots that function well. This work has supported me for the last 20 years. My sculptural clay work is about form, balance, natural environments, life cycles and potential. This is reflected in the firing methods I use (pit, sawdust, sagger), the materials employed to create certain effects and surface treatment of the clay. I love the idea of spontaneity and the element of surprise that comes from this type of firing environment where you have little control as to what the final piece will look like. It’s like the randomness of life events that mark and identify us as individuals. So are the pieces that come through the firings. As my teaching is becoming more of a source of income I feel the opportunity arising to do more of my creative work without the monetary pressure. This is my dream, to open a space in my life to execute my ideas, the ones that have been in my head and in my notebooks for years. One direction I foresee my work going in is expanding into different media. I want to educate myself in the digital/computer arena, using audio and visual in an instillation piece that explores the idea of “the journey”. I am forever interested in the deep workings of the human being, the emotional, spiritual life and the metaphors that surround us. The thing I am most proud of is my ability to work with people and help to provide a creative and encouraging environment. What is essential to a persons growth is their ability to connect with something real inside themselves. This is always at the forefront of my teaching and my own journey to express what’s real. |
