Artisans ‘Making Waves’ in Wakefield WAKEFIELD – Laura Winward has been creating since she was nine years old in one way or another. Earlier this year, she created something unique and special that is gracing the village - "Waves of Creation" at 330 Main St. Waves of Creation was inevitable in many ways as Winward sought to open a shop to sell her own crafts which at the time she describes as bath, body and candles. She had a few friends who made jewelry and thought they could sell their things, too. A year ago she began looking for space to lease to bring her dream to fruition. And when she found it, the 900 square foot space was larger than she had anticipated for her vision. She knew she couldn’t fill it with just her crafts. She decided to reach a bit further and with a collaborative-type venue in mind, she secured 19 local artisans who were interested in showing their work on a consignment basis. "The minute we opened the door, people started finding us," says Winward regarding the many additional artists who have since joined them. There are now 42 artisans represented at Waves of Creation, all but two are from Rhode Island and they are surely making waves. It’s more than just a store but is becoming a showplace with artisans doing demonstrations on the sidewalk, classes coming in the fall and an extremely unusual and unique assortment of arts and crafts.Left, Some of the unique treasures found at Waves of Creation. "There is a resurgence in people looking for local, handcrafted quality stuff and this is a way to showcase that year round," says Winward. "It’s like bringing a really talented craft show to the people. All handmade and handmade from the heart by people who love what they are doing. They put their heart and soul into what they make." The artists there represent a variety of crafts from pottery to weaving, jewelry to candle making, glasswork, tie dye socks to fanciful bags. With gifts available at every price point, there is something for everyone. The environment is fun and friendly.
